From an impoverished household in Fengshou Village, Gao Liangquan opened a hostel in May, 2017. Previously the family depended on Gao’s working away from home. He earned only 3,000 yuan (U.S. $450) per month and this income was not steady. To date the hostel has brought in more than 10,000 yuan (U.S. $1,500), making it a valuable source of additional income.

Gao has two children, a daughter in college and a son in junior high school. Both of them have student subsidies. The family also has shares in a tourism company and a cooperative, from which they received 1,000 yuan (U.S. $150) in dividend for last quarter.

68 impoverished households from Fengshou numbering 172 people escaped from poverty in 2016. 81 households numbering 202 people will do likewise in 2017. It is planned that by 2018, no households will remain in poverty. Tourism, an important weapon in Fengshou’s battle against poverty, will help the village to a better life and a richer harvest.
