Elion turns the Kubuqi Desert into an oasis (2)

Maintaining the road proved to be an even greater challenge than the construction work. A strong wind might bury the road beneath the sand at any time. So it was very important to fix the dunes that bordered the roadside. In order to do this, Elion wove straw and desert willow into a mesh and planted willow or Artemisia grass in it, locking the sand firmly with a green ecological barrier. This approach proved very effective. After the completion of seven phases of desert-crossing highway, a 500-km-long network was in place. [Photo by Yang Jia]
