Located in the southernmost part of Baitugang town, Lingwu city, Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, Haizijing village suffered from poor transportation until several years ago. Residents grew plants used in traditional Chinese medicine, such as liquorice, and engaged in other agricultural undertakings, but many of them lived in poverty.
In 2015, new roads were constructed in the area, paving the way to prosperity in Haizijing. Poverty alleviation policies also made it possible for residents to obtain special loans designed to help them engage in the animal husbandry industry, which resulted in significant increases in earnings. Annual income exceeded 13,000 yuan (US$1,997) per capita in the hamlet in 2020.
“Life is getting better and better now,” 46-year-old Haizijing resident Wu Xiuhua stated recently. “I started raising sheep after I applied for and received an entrepreneurship loan for women. I had an inventory of 300 head last year, which would have been unthinkable in the past.”
