A grand gathering to mark the nation's poverty alleviation accomplishments and honor model poverty fighters was held at the Great Hall of the People in Beijing on Thursday. Chinese President Xi Jinping announced that China has secured a "complete victory" in its fight against poverty.
UN resident coordinator in China Siddharth Chatterjee said during an exclusive interview by China.org.cn last Thursday," I want to take this opportunity to congratulate the government of China and president Xi Jinping in particular, for the remarkable work in the last 40 years. But more particularly so, in the last 8 years, about 100 million people were removed out of extreme poverty in the rural areas, and that is very remarkable and commendable. I hope to see that they are able to share the important lessons of China with the rest of the world and particularly with Africa about how it can be done."
