“I have been working here nearly nine months now,” notes 27-year-old poverty alleviation official Tang Wei in Guanmiao village, Madian township, Luoning county, Henan province. “The efforts that grassroots poverty reduction staff make are very impressive. I perform all of my duties in a conscientious manner because our work is very important to the people who live here.”
Guanmiao village was registered as an impoverished village at the provincial level until recently. The people who were born there mostly engage in agriculture or work as migrant laborers in other areas.
The largely middle-aged and elderly residents who remain in Guanmiao eventually began cultivating the Jinzhusha pear cultivar in order to become more prosperous. A total of 18 members of eight households currently live in poverty in the village.
Many young people in China have devoted themselves to poverty alleviation and rural revitalization in recent years. They serve as poverty alleviation officials, village first secretaries, modern agriculturalists who teach farmers new techniques, and in other capacities. Their efforts have injected new vitality into rural parts of China and helped impoverished citizens escape from poverty and become more prosperous.
