China’s efforts to address climate change will have a profound effect on the future of the planet and global sustainability, said Beate Trankmann, UNDP Resident Representative in China.

UNDP has been involved in climate change related projects since the early 1980’s and has implemented 15 projects in China during the last 10 years, seeking to transform industries and sectors and promoting hydrogen-based clean energy solutions.

From her perspective, China’s innovative, green and inclusive development reflects the 2030 Sustainable Development Agenda. The country has made progress in solar technology and low-carbon transportation and created more new renewable energy jobs.

“Despite all this progress, there is still more that can be done and UNDP stands ready to continue providing support.” she said.

Trankmann noted that sustainable and comprehensive ideas, solutions, and models are key to address climate change and build broad and robust resiliency in buffering against the COVID-19 pandemic.

“One such concept is the transition to a green economy. By adopting green pathways, we can protect the environment and combat climate change while simultaneously boosting economic growth and helping people to become more resistant to future shocks.” she said.

To her, the international community must remember to leave no one behind and support the most vulnerable in the push to adopt green pathways.

“Green economy has the potential to improve resiliency against future shocks and crises. The global response to COVID-19 has already proven that it is possible.” she said, adding UNDP emphasizes the social and economic benefits of low-carbon transformation and has a chance to accelerate its work with countries to carry forward some of the actions adopted during this period beyond the pandemic.
