Liu Shuangyan is the first secretary of Zhuji village, Lixin county, Anhui province. In 2012, she was appointed the first secretary of Luxiaoying village, Lixin county as a member of the fifth group of officials in Anhui province. In 2014, Liu became the first secretary of Zhuji village. She applied to stay at her post when her term ended in 2019 and has now served as its first secretary for three consecutive terms.

A livestock base that is more than 13.3 ha and 25.3 ha’s worth of trees grown for their economic value can currently be found in Zhuji. These projects benefit 378 people who are part of 190 poverty-stricken households. Thirty-five homes feature photovoltaic installations, and a 187-kW photovoltaic power station has been built for the village. At the end of 2018, Zhuji’s collective economy brought in 700,000 yuan (US$100,304) and the poverty rate had fallen to 0.9 percent from 13 percent in 2014.

Liu has always been committed to her poverty alleviation work. She has continued to stay in Zhuji, despite her mother and husband both passing during her tenure. The dedicated official received a national award for her contribution to poverty reduction in September 2019.

Liu commented on the work ahead of her and stated: “The streetlights in Zhuji are not yet on, its economy is still small, and more than 20 households are still living in poverty. I have more work to do. I will continue to stay here and help them eliminate poverty.” (Huang Bohan/Xinhua)
