Extension of the Submission Date of the “Global Solicitation on Best Poverty Reduction Practices (Second Call)”

This is to announce that the submission deadline of best poverty reduction cases has postponed from March 31, 2020 to June 30, 2020, as decided by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China,the China Internet Information Center, the World Bank, the Asian Development Bank, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development and the World Food Programme. This decision is carefully made in view of the outbreak of COVID-19 and aims to reserve more time for authors to compile poverty reduction case studies and facilitate the preparation and management work of case study solicitation.

The work team will keep tracks of the condition of the COVID-19 epidemic and make proper adjustment to the follow-up work accordingly.

Guidelines for the Global Solicitation on Best Poverty Reduction Practices (Second Call)

I. Background

The Global Poverty Reduction and Inclusive Growth Portal (GPIG) (http://www.iprcc.org.cn/south) is a knowledge sharing platform that specializes in policy research, country profiles and news on poverty reduction and inclusive growth. Initiated by the World Bank (WB) and supported by the Asian Development Bank (ADB), GPIG is co-hosted by the International Poverty Reduction Center in China (IPRCC) and the China Internet Information Center (CIIC). Since its launch in May 2016, GPIG has created a network of more than 40 international policy research institutes, think tanks, universities and organizations in the pursuit of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

In May 2017, GPIG launched its knowledge sharing database, the Global Poverty Reduction Online Knowledge Sharing Database (http://case.iprcc.org.cn/). The database enables the sharing of information concerning successful poverty reduction models and initiatives from both China and the international community. Designed for worldwide users, the database presents poverty reduction cases along with relevant research, studies, policies and laws.

In May 2018, WB, ADB, IPRCC, CIIC, and the three Rome-based Agencies of the United Nations (RBAs)—Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), World Food Programme (WFP)—jointly launched the first “Global Solicitation and Challenge Prize on Best Poverty Reduction Practices.” Its broader goal is to enrich and improve the content quality of the database, promote the development and sharing of poverty alleviation knowledge worldwide, and forge close partnerships. The solicitation has received a total of 820 case studies, of which, 645 submissions are from government agencies at all levels, enterprises and individuals in China; 175 international cases are contributed by international organizations including WB, FAO, WFP, IFAD, ADB, The University of Oxford, and the Takushoku University in Japan, covering more than 30 countries, including Brazil, Philippines, Colombia, Hayti and Pakistan.

A total of 110 poverty reduction case studies have been selected by a jury made up of representatives from the seven hosting organizations for their outstanding practice. The final list was decided based on discussions and evaluation during three review meetings and will be published in the2019 China Poverty Reduction International Forum in October.

II. Objective

The activity aims to enrich and improve the content quality of the Global Poverty Reduction Online Knowledge Sharing Database, make better use of best poverty reduction case studies as carriers of practical experiences, and promote South-South Cooperation in the area of poverty alleviation through knowledge sharing and innovative partnerships.

The Global Solicitation on Best Poverty Reduction Practices (Second Call) will be launched based on successful experiences of the first event, seeking for more poverty reduction case studies worldwide. The hosting organizations will jointly review these cases to select the best ones. All the selected case studies will be rewritten and translated according to international custom and standards. About 100 best case studies are expected to be published in 2020, and will be shared and promoted around the world.

VI. Content Requirement

Participating case studies have to represent successful stories relevant specifically to poverty reduction. Writing quality is essential, in order to build understandable, clear and concise cases. The connection between the implemented strategy/policy and its effect on poverty must be clear-cut. The case studies should demonstrate applicability in the wider poverty reduction context, such as in similar geographies or economies.

VII. Language requirements

Case studies can be submitted either in English or Chinese, with no less than 5,000 words.

VIII. Copyright requirements

①Participating case studies must respect the social and cultural norms of the communities in which they were implemented as well as obey local laws.

② Applicants have to be the original author of the submitted case studies and hold copyright of the case study.

③ Individual authors of selected case studies must share their copyright of the case study with GPIG. GPIG has the usage right of the case study, can edit and modify the case study according to its writing standards, and upload it to the database for readers to view and download for free. Moreover, GPIG can use the case studies in non-profit promotional activities for free. Names of authors will be published along with respective case studies.

④Organizational participants of selected case studies own the copyright of their submitted case studies. GPIG has the usage right of the case study, can edit and modify the case study according to its writing standards, and upload it to the database for readers to view and download it free of charge. Moreover, GPIG can use the case studies in non-profit promotional activities for free. Names of authors will be published along with respective case studies. If the organization that holds the copyright has special requirements, GPIG will sign a separate license agreement.

X. Certificates:

The campaign will choose 100 original and outstanding poverty reduction case studies from both organizations and individuals.

Each winner will receive a certificate issued by the hosting organizations.

The organizer will also invite some authors of the case study to participate in relevant international forum and exchange activities.
