Confidence: Reaching Its Goal as Scheduled
The report delivered at the 19th National Congress of the Communist Party of China held in 2017 pointed out that over the five years since 2012 decisive progress had been made in the fight against poverty: More than 60 million people were lifted out of poverty, and the poverty headcount ratio dropped from 10.2 percent to less than 4 percent. China is determined to eliminate poverty in all poor counties and regions by the year 2020, which is 10 years ahead of the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
“I see it’s a great country with great goals, and I’m sure China will succeed,” Maya Takagi suggested.
Ana Paula de la O Campos reckons that challenges will become very big as the time to reach the poverty reduction goal is coming nearer, because people remaining in poverty are those located in remote places, or those who are left behind. “We need to find more targeted and more specific policies to reach the poorest,” she said.
To achieve the final goal of eradicating poverty, according to Maya Takagi, it is important to use targeted approaches tailored for the poor in different conditions. “The only way is to mark where they are, who they are and why they are poor,” she noted.
