Over the past 40 years of reform and opening-up, China has managed to free about 790 million people from absolute poverty, which accounted for more than 70% of the global total in poverty reduction in that period.
President Xi Jinping has urged all efforts to win the tough battle against poverty, and accordingly China has made a new progress in the process of building a moderate prosperous society.
As the first developing country to reach the UN Millennium Development Goals in poverty reduction, China has made significant contributions to eradicating the poverty in the world.
Marielza Oliveira, Director of the UNESCO office in Beijing, praised China's poverty relief efforts, saying that China's poverty alleviation program is one of the most astounding accomplishments of Chinese civilization.

"There are a lot of amazing accomplishments of China, bringing almost 800 million people out of poverty is something that without doubt no other country has ever been able to achieve in proportion or in numbers," said Marielza Oliveira.
Getting out of poverty and to achieve common prosperity is a problem faced by the whole world. Marielza Oliveira pointed out that China's experience in poverty reduction is something that the United Nations is really looking at and learning from. She would like to promote China’s successful experience among other countries as well.
Talking about sharing China's practices to the world, Marielza Oliveira said that "there are so many good practices and so many lessons that the world can benefit from China". For example, she added, promoting the transition from rural to urban areas, social security measures with Chinese characteristics and other successful practical experiences are worth learning.
She hopes that China will continue to share its valuable experience and will help the world achieve its goal of eradicating poverty by 2030.
As the most populous developing country, China has been an active advocate and strong promoter of global poverty reduction. Marielza Oliveira indicated that without China’s contribution, the world cannot achieve the Millennium Development Goals.
