The second case review meeting for “The Global Solicitation and Challenge Prize on Best Poverty Reduction Practices” was held on Tuesday. Around 100 outstanding cases were selected from over 800 cases at the meeting.

The jury was made up of representatives from seven organizations, including the World Bank (WB), Asian Development Bank (ADB), UN Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), International Fund for Agriculture Development (IFAD), World Food Programme (WFP), China International Poverty Reduction Center (IPRCC), and China Internet Information Center(CIIC).

Zhang Guangping, the deputy director general of IPRCC, said at the meeting, the working team had received 805 poverty reduction cases in total. Government agencies at all levels, enterprises and individuals in China submitted 630 case studies, which introduced various poverty reduction approaches, such as poverty reduction through tourism, financial poverty alleviation, poverty reduction for vulnerable groups and poverty reduction through employment and entrepreneurship.

International organizations, such as WFP, IFAD, WB, ADB, World Trade Organization, and International Monetary Fund, and research institutions, such as Oxford Poverty & Human Development Initiative, University College London, Pakistan Institute of Development Economics and Takushoku University of Japan, contributed 175 international cases from over 20 countries, including Brazil, the Philippines, Colombia, Pakistan, Haiti, Ghana, Cambodia, Cameroon, Kenya, Nigeria, Laos, Malaysia, etc.

Wan Jun, assistant to the head of China Institute for Poverty Reduction, Beijing Normal University, introduced the 142 short listed cases at the meeting. The experts discussed and commented on these cases and gave overall consideration to their representativeness, implementation process, experience, sustainability, promotional effect and the market demands. After the vote, a pre-selected list of outstanding cases was produced.

Three sample cases were also discussed by the jury and an observer from UN Women, covering their structure, content, background, length and language. After modification, the samples will serve as the templates for the final selected outstanding cases, which will be jointly published by seven organizations later this year.

“The Global Solicitation and Challenge Prize on Best Poverty Reduction Practices” was launched in May last year. Designed to promote knowledge-sharing, it invites organizations and individuals from all over the world to submit cases on poverty reduction. It aims to share domestic and international successful practice of poverty alleviation with cases as the carrier.

This is the first effort made by the seven authoritative organizations to gather information on best-practice poverty reduction, as a pilot attempt to extend and innovate global partnerships on poverty reduction.
