In Kubuqi, numbers of sheep are increasing in the pens of local herdsmen. In some cases, sheep may number in the hundreds. In response to the growing sheep population and the associated environment risks, Kubuqi published the grazing prohibition policy. In spring, herdsmen keep sheep penned in order to protect newly planted vegetation from overgrazing. On the premise of not harming the environment, flocks of sheep are permitted to move around in the open sands. [Photo by George Steinmetz]
