Chu Wenjin was a rural clerk. He has been an outstanding member of the Communist Party of China for more than 30 years. He and his wife are over sixty and their son and daughter are working far from their home. With the assistance of the rural Poverty Relief office, the couple have been able to develop their own agriculture and livestock business. Their income has increased, and they have shaken off the badge of “impoverished family”. But more than that, they have also played a leading role and provided a learning paradigm for other families in their village who are still living in poverty.

Last year, the couple raised one hundred chickens, four pigs, ten goats and two buffalo. Two additional buffalo calves have been bred this year. In addition, six acres of light corn were planted which produced a harvest of more than four tons. Three acres of potatoes were planted at the beginning of this year, and a herb allotment will shortly be added. (Li Zhen)
