South-South and Triangular Cooperation (SSTC) is an integral part of IFAD’s work and helps achieve sustainable and inclusive rural transformation by building trust, forging partnerships, sharing knowledge, leveraging resources and scaling up proven solutions.

Established in 2018 with a supplementary contribution of US$10 million from China, the China-IFAD SSTC Facility is IFAD’s first facility dedicated to SSTC. It aims to mobilize knowledge, technologies and resources from the Global South to accelerate rural poverty alleviation, enhance rural productivity and advance sustainable rural transformation.Using a demand-driven approach, projects are developed, owned and executed by the recipient organizations, including government agencies, NGOs and the private sectors, following IFAD’s policies procdures and guidelines.

In line with IFAD’s SSTC Strategy, the China-IFAD SSTC Facility focuses on:

● Addressing knowledge gaps and scaling up innovations;

● Fostering partnerships and business opportunities along value chains;

● Promoting dialogues among development stakeholders and building the capacity of SSTC partners and rural people.

As of early 2023, the Facility has supported 16 projects in more than 30 countries, generating nearly 200 solutions and benefitting over 4,500 smallholder farmers with 40,000 indirect beneficiaries. Facility-funded projects cover a broad range of themes—including climate change, gender, nutrition and youth—and are targeted to smallholder farmers, farmers’ organizations, small agribusinesses.
