“Sustainable transport is a comprehensive concept. There is no one solution face all and no one model face all. Instead of interpreting it as just a kind of green transport, it’s a people-centered approach for development, providing with an easy, safe, green and reliable transport system”, said Mr. Liu Zhenmin, UN Under-Secretary-General on Tuesday in Beijing during the UN Sustainable Transport Curtain Raiser Press Conference, when answering china.org.cn.

“But do not forget transport system is not for transport itself. Transport system must be able to support economic development and people’s life of the country. It depends on the national conditions and resources and demands of the particular area. There would be no one face-for-all solution but different area may have different solution”, he added, which is a renewed sense of urgency for achieving sustainable transport globally– transport that is safe, green, efficient and accessible.

The 2nd UN Sustainable Transport Conference will be held from 14 to 16 October in Beijing. The Conference will provide a roadmap for achieving transport systems that are designed to help protect the environment, while opening economic opportunities and improving health and well-being and will focus on the opportunities and challenges for all modes of transport – road, rail, aviation and waterborne – and provide concrete solutions for achieving sustainable transport worldwide.

The 3-day Conference will be hybrid and consist of plenary sessions, a Ministers’ Forum, a Business Forum and a Science, Engineering and Technology Forum. At the heart of discussions will be the links between achieving sustainable transport and economic recovery, climate mitigation and other issues.
