Episode 2 The Wise

On a winter’s day in the year 1244, a grand send-off ceremony was being held in Sakya Monastery, 600 kilometers west of Lhasa.

An old man was about to embark on a long journey.

His name was Sakya Pandita, also known as Sapan, and he was the fourth Kunga Gyaltsen-patriarch of the Sakya School. He was setting off for Liangzhou, thousands of miles away, where he would meet Godan, the famous Mongol commander.

That year, Sakya Pandita was 63.

It seemed that he was preparing to march off on what could possibly end up being a one-way trip.
