More than 800 million people have escaped from absolute poverty in rural China since the country’s reform and opening-up began in 1978, which is the largest and fastest example of poverty reduction in human history. The nation’s impoverished population decreased from approximately 98.99 million during the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China in 2012 to 5.51 million at the end of 2019. The poverty rate decreased from 8.5 percent in 2013 to 0.6 percent, which is the best poverty eradication performance in China’s history.
